Getting to Santorini

Santorini can be reached by air or boat.

Athens is the main transport hub in Greece, however there is an international airport on Santorini offering direct flights from many European hubs. There are regular and inexpensive flights from Athens and other major European cities to Santorini. We know many of our guests are planning on travelling around Greece or other European countries before or after the wedding. We recommend using Google Flights to plan your trip based on your own travel itinerary.

If you prefer to take a ferry, check Ferry Hopper (www.ferryhopper.com) to view ferry times and prices. There are high-speed and regular speed ferries, so check to confirm the departure and arrival times. Once you arrive at the ferry port, you can reach the towns at the top of the cliffs by taxi, cable car, or even donkey (Pearce’s recommended method!).

There are also regular ferry services from Athens and the neighboring islands (the Cyclades). If you are planning on arriving or departing to/from Santorini to another Greek Island aside from Mykonos or Crete, you will need to take a ferry as many of the smaller Greek islands do not have an airport.

If taking a ferry, make sure to build in a buffer as the ferry boats will leave promptly. At the Santorini ferry port there aren’t a lot of air conditioned buildings, so bring cold water and dress appropriately. Most ferries won’t sell out but we recommend booking your tickets in advance.

Getting around Santorini

You don’t need to rent a car for your trip to Santorini. The island is quite walkable within the major cities. You can also walk between Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli with good walking shoes, but walking from Fira to cities like Oia or Akrotiri would be a trek.

Taxis and uber is available on the island, but it’s not the same as calling an uber in Toronto. Build buffer time and have a backup plan if you have somewhere you need to be (read: don’t be late to our wedding!).

In Fira there are also many places to rent motorbikes and ATVs which are a great way to get around the island or get to the beach.

Where to stay

We will arrange transportation the night of the wedding to/from accommodations in Fira/Firostefani, Megalochori, and Akrotiri. We are planning to stay in Fira or Firostefani, and we recommend guests to stay in the Fira / Firostefani or Megalochori areas to be closest to other guests and wedding events. If you choose to stay in cities other than Fira/Firostefani, Megalochori, or Akrotiri, you will be responsible for arranging your own transportation on the wedding night.

Fira and Firostefani are neighbouring cities located at the center of the island. Fira has some of the most nightlife and restaurants on the island. Firostefani is quite a bit quieter than the bustling Fira, but is still very walkable to restaurants, bars, and nightlife.

Akrotiri and Megalochori are smaller, quiet towns on the south end of the island (close to the wedding venue). There are fewer restaurants and bars, but they are close to wineries and accommodations are generally less expensive.

Imerovigli is just north of Fira, and also offers many places to stay. There are fewer restaurants and bars than in Fira, but the town is quieter and less busy.

Oia, at the top of the island, is the most popular (and expensive) city to stay in. It gets very busy with tourists, but offers some of the best quintessential ‘Santorini’ views. Restaurants and bars here are a lot more expensive than other areas of the island.

Hotels and Airbnbs

There are an endless number of hotels and Airbnbs on the island at different price points and styles.

In general, Airbnbs and B&Bs are less expensive than hotels, and are the best option to find a room with a caldera view if that's what you're after (which can be very expensive at hotels). We recommend searching for Airbnbs with air conditioning - not all will have A/C.
